Introduction:
Hello there, future roofing experts!
Today, we're going to explore the world of roofs.
Yes, roofs! They're more than just a cover over our heads.
They come in different shapes, sizes, and materials, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.
Let's dive in!
NOTE: There's a handy quick summary of the pros and cons of each roof type at the end of the article.
Greetings! I'm Garry Sephton, a dedicated guardian of roofs. 👊🏘️
We've been privileged to serve almost 10,000 households and businesses, providing a range of roofing services from installations to repairs. Our base is in the lovely town of Sutton Coldfield, and if you'd like to hear about the work we do, CheckATrade.co.uk and Google have got us covered with some stellar reviews.
So I know a little something about good roofing services and I'm here to share my knowledge with you.
1. Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are the most common type of roofing in the UK. They're affordable, easy to install, and come in a variety of colours. However, they don't last as long as other materials, typically around 20 years. They're also not the most environmentally friendly option.
2. Metal Roofing
Metal roofs are durable, fire-resistant, and can last up to 70 years! They're also great for rainwater harvesting due to their smooth surface. On the downside, they can be noisy during rainstorms and are more expensive than asphalt shingles.
3. Slate Tiles
Slate tiles are beautiful, durable, and fire-resistant. They can last for over a century if properly maintained! However, they're heavy and require a strong support structure. They're also one of the most expensive roofing options.
4. Clay Tiles
Clay tiles are very durable and can last for a century. They're fire-resistant and provide excellent insulation. However, like slate, they're heavy and require a strong roof structure. They're also more expensive than asphalt shingles and metal roofs.
5. Flat Roofs
Flat roofs are common in commercial buildings but can also be found in residential homes. They're cost-effective and provide extra living space (you can even create a roof garden!). However, they require more maintenance as water doesn't run off as easily as on sloped roofs. We'll delve into more detail about the different types of flat roofs later in this article.
6. Green Roofs
Green roofs are covered with plants and can reduce heat loss, manage stormwater, and provide habitats for wildlife. They're also visually appealing! However, they require a strong structure, regular maintenance, and are more expensive to install.
Now, let's explore the different types of flat roofs that Sutton Roofing specialises in:
7. High-Performance (Torch-On) Felt Roofing
High-performance or torch-on felt roofing is a popular choice for flat roofs. It's called 'torch-on' because the felt is applied using a blowtorch, which ensures a secure and waterproof seal. This type of roofing is durable and resistant to the elements, making it a great option for areas with harsh weather conditions. However, the installation process can be dangerous due to the use of open flames, so it should always be done by a professional.
8. Liquid Roofing
Liquid roofing involves applying a liquid roof coating to a flat or low-sloped roof. This coating cures to form a rubber-like waterproof membrane that's fully adhered to the surface. It's a great way to seal and protect your roof from water damage. Liquid roofs are durable and flexible, which allows them to withstand temperature changes without cracking. However, they require precise application, and the surface of the roof must be thoroughly cleaned and prepared before application.
9. GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) or Fibreglass Roofing
GRP or fibreglass roofing is another excellent option for flat roofs. It's lightweight, durable, and completely waterproof. A well-installed fibreglass roof can last for more than 30 years with minimal maintenance. It's also available in a variety of colours and finishes, so you can choose one that best suits your home. However, GRP roofing requires dry conditions for installation, so it might not be the best option if you live in a rainy area.
Each type of roof has its own set of pros and cons, and the best choice depends on your specific needs, budget, and the climate in your area. Always consult with a professional roofer before making a decision. Remember, a good roof not only protects your home from the elements but also contributes to its overall aesthetic appeal.
So, the next time you look at a roof, you'll know there's more to it than meets the eye.

I would recommend Gary and his company without any reservation after the fantastic job he did for us. From the first contact he gives confidence with his most pleasant yet professional manner. He was very busy, told me how long the wait might be and then did everything he could to do the work sooner, getting it done before Christmas. They worked unobtrusively, cleanly and carefully. The results are excellent. His quote was better than others, but notwithstanding that, I would definitely ask him to do another job for us if necessary, before others. Thanks and well done.
From quote to completion of work I could not fault this company. Very prompt to quote, competitive price and communication excellent at all stages of the process. Job completed to a very high standard and tidied up after completion ( even checking debris in neighbours garden). I would have no hesitation in recommending.
Had my roof completely done on my new extension, and decided to have more work done on the existing roof. Rang Gary and he came out of his way super quick to have a look and came up with a solution and completed the work immediately. Super fast very trustworthy and brilliant job done on the spot. Would highly recomend Sutton Roofing if you want a honest job done and right first time every time.????????
Highly recommend Sutton Roofing. Garry and Steve are very professional and friendly. Attention to detail. Hard working to get the job accomplished tirelessly despite under the hot weather, tidied up not a single debris. Excellent value for money and quality. 100% positive experience. They are so good that I will definitely recommend to others.
